Bud rot is particularly insidious because the visible outside of a flower does not reliably reflect the condition of its interior. Effective prevention therefore combines several levels: a stable climate, moisture periods that are as short as possible, air exchange, clean working practices, and regular inspections of especially dense flowers.
This principle continues after harvest. Only unaffected material should enter the drying area, and the flowers must be able to release their moisture evenly. This can reduce the risk that a hidden infection or an excessively humid post-harvest climate leads to visible mold only at a late stage.
