Manufacturer: Hyp3rids Genetics
This cannabis strain is extremely unusual, a genetic for true old-school fetishists who are searching for the holy grail of sativa breeding. Colombian Gold is a classic, legendary cannabis strain – a pure sativa landrace that originally grew in the Santa Marta mountains on the Caribbean coast of Colombia. It is one of the earliest naturally occurring genetics, predating the popularity of modern hybrids. It is a true icon of cannabis culture: in the 1960s and 70s, Colombian Gold was known and sought after worldwide. Many modern hybrid strains — such as Skunk #1 and other popular varieties — were bred using Colombian Gold genetics, giving it a major influence on today's cannabis gene pool.
Colombian Gold is not difficult to grow, but you really need patience to allow it to fully mature. We're talking 24 to 26 weeks, but this long wait is worth it on all levels. The results are extreme, the plants grow huge and therefore need to be supported so they don't break under their own weight. The smell itself is also very unusual and strong, reminiscent of a mixture of pine, earth and butane – a smell that is very intense and truly old school.
Lineage: Landrace – Hairloom 1970's Colombian Gold IBL Genetics: Sativa Flowering Time: 24 - 26 weeks Smell: extreme, pine, earth, butane THC: 16%
After the United States destroyed most of Mexico's cannabis fields in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Colombian weed became the first choice for connoisseurs. The Colombian Gold of the 1970s was indeed something very special. It was stronger and much more psychedelic than most Mexican strains, which made it very popular and turned it into a legend. However, with the advent of indoor cultivation and long flowering times, Colombian Gold lost popularity to strains from Asia with shorter flowering times and the clear, bright, energetic highs from Thailand. This, in turn, influenced the newly discovered hybrid production with strains such as Skunk and, in particular, Haze. The original Haze that took the cannabis world by storm is now known as a triple Colombian hybrid. Much of these early Haze strains found their way into NL #5 Haze, Neville's Haze and Jack Herer, to name but a few.
Colombian Gold is also known to have been part of the original genetic makeup of Skunk. Skunk was originally just a cross between Colombian Gold and Afghan before being crossed with Acapulco Gold and developed into Skunk #1. Haze and Skunk have both dominated the hybrid market and have become the backbone of most modern strains.
HYP3RIDS' Colombian Gold IBL originates from seeds that were collected in 1970 and stored for years before being replanted recently. The two best males that HYP3RIDS found both started producing pollen around week 5-6, which is typical for a pure strain like this. It is a true holy grail of cannabis genetics, a strain that every connoisseur must try. The THC content may seem low at first glance, but due to the combination of all cannabinoids, Colombian Gold is one of the strongest sativas in the world...
